BATTLE BROOK STABLE NEWS
Now that we've gotten into full swing in Year Seventeen, I finally earned a chance to sit down and look at the books, the magazines and see where we are. You'd think it would be easy to find time to do these things when everyone is urging you to take a seat and relax. I swear my staff is overbearing now that I'm reaching the second trimester of the new baby. It's not like I didn't do a fine job with Keller... Brooks and I are welcoming a little girl into the family early this summer so I am trying to get as much planning done as possible in the mean time. Hopefully, baby girl's arrival doesn't happen the week of the Belmont Stakes as it looks like we have not one, not two, but four potential horses heading for the big race.
This year we are crammed with leases, the majority of whom are with us through the end of the year. The lone ranger not sticking with us is Secret's Surprise, who is on the brink of reaching grade one status. Once she hits that coveted rank, she'll head back to Nature Blue Stable's either for broodmare or racehorse duty. She's been training well and her comeback race was pretty strong. We hope she gets that win as she's come so far since she entered our barn in Year Sixteen. We'll miss her spirited nature and her consistency.
We took in All That Jazz from Grayson Meadows and plan to keep her to turf racing this season. She's been training vigorously and she's taken to our rolling turf hills quite magnificently. We expect her to have a big year. Despite her growing pains last season, we think she'll be at her best this year. We'd like to remind everyone that she was a tremendous talent at two and she is a grade two mare. There is hope for her to reach her superstar quality once again.
My Kingdom Come is set to remain with us again for the season. We really adore the gray mare and hope to make it to the HOTY races with her. Competition is tight at the moment as evidenced by her fourth place finish in the Black Rose Sprint, but once we get her to grade one we'll start pointing her to the races. With Artemis' Glory heading to the dirt, we think My Kingdom Come will be talented enough to remain competitive in the filly and mare turf sprint division.
We took another step in our partnership with Intrepid Racing Stable by organizing the sale and purchase of two three year olds. Intrepid Racing and Battle Brook Stable now co-own Final Judgement and Shatter. Both horses are with BBS currently, each with wins on the season. However, it is expected that Shatter will head to IRS at some point in the year. Final Judgment may be pointing toward the Green Mile, but he will have to compete with Kismet for the chance.
Swing Dancer turned in a marvelous end of season performance to vault to grade two and headed to Grayson Meadows, the land of the sprinters, to continue her career at age four. She shook off the rust with a second place finish under their jock in Year Seventeen and we expect her to shine this year under their tutelage.
We'd also like to announce the pensioning of Ebony Gold Lady. The three time grade one producing broodmare was expected to be bred to Frozen Motion in Year Nineteen, but she hasn't quite recovered yet from her last foaling. She's been much too good to the racing industry, producing the likes of Infinite Warcry, Dazzling Dame and Like A Lady. She has one foal racing on the track in Whispering Melody and her yearling filly by GS Royal Crown is set to begin training in August. She'll have a forever home with Battle Brook Stable and will join El Sol del Mar, Royal Assault, Finale Slew and Ashanti. Not bad company to keep if I say so myself.
With the loss of the future foal between Frozen Motion and Ebony Gold Lady, we have decided to find another mare for our handsome champion. Frozen Motion has done much better than expected at stud, siring a Breeders' Cup winner in his first crop. We would like to repeat the success of breeding Frozen Motion and Axis Mundae, by breeding the big gray to our Cross My Heart. We had not identified a worthy outside suitor to the Hall of Fame mare until Ebony Gold Lady's pensioning. Cross has foaled two foals to date, two colts by Royal Cadenza and Demonic Desires. We think this Y18 breeding will continue the trend of good looking, athletic foals that she has already produced.
We would also like to announce two horses that are now for sale. We have the four year old stunning stallion, Indian Night, and the three year old, blue blooded filly, Apache Sunrise, for sale. We are looking for experienced stables to take them on as both can be difficult. Indian Night is set to make his first start of Y17 in the Jump Start Stakes, Feb Wk 1. Apache Sunrise has run twice in Y17 already, with a second and third place finish to her name.
Interested barns [creativecause, S u N f r O s T ~, Kenren, Isabelle, Cruisey, Cavallo, Holly] may contact me at any time of the day. It is expected that they will stay for sale even if no one expresses interest at this time.
